Private Residential Garage
Fredrick, MDOverview
Bates Architects’ design for the new garage demonstrates a sensitive approach to blending modern functionality with historic preservation. By collaborating with the Owner and working with the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), they were able to replace the existing deteriorating garage structure while respecting the architectural character of the district.
The design features a four-bay garage that maintains a balance between scale and style appropriate for the historic setting. The extended span of the building was achieved with a painted black bar joist roof structure, which is both practical and visually appealing. This choice is complemented by the contrasting clear-coated pine, structural tongue-and-groove roof decking, which not only provides necessary support but also adds an element of craftsmanship and aesthetic interest to the otherwise utilitarian structure.
Overall, Bates Architects’ design ensures the new garage is integrated into the historic context, honoring the district’s character while meeting the Owner’s modern needs.
